In 1923, the county commissioners recognized the need for a more secure and modern jail facility. A new two-story brick jail was constructed on Main Street in Columbus, providing separate cells for male and female inmates. This jail served the county for nearly 50 years.

Modernization and Expansion

In the 1970s, the Stillwater County Jail underwent significant renovations to address overcrowding and improve inmate conditions. An additional wing was added, doubling the capacity to 32 inmates. The jail also implemented new security systems and programs to enhance rehabilitation and reduce recidivism.

In 2007, a $2.5 million expansion project was completed to further increase capacity and provide a dedicated infirmary and mental health unit. The project also led to the implementation of a new video surveillance system.
